Destiny’s Dice

A Cultural show named as “Destiny’s Dice”(Niyathiyude Chathurangam) will be performed at Nishagandhi, on 09^th December, with the Inaugural function of the 16^th IFFK.

It’s a twenty three minute stage performance which showcases twenty five characters from the great Indian epic: Mahabharatham. Adapted from two scenes of   Vayaskar Moos’s  Kadhakali,   the show will take  the audience on a speedy journey to the mystique world of Indian Epics.

The eminent film maker T K Rajiv Kumar concieved and directed this novel stage performance. Text was edited by B R Prasad, Art Director   Sabu Sivan, Artist co-ordination by Kala.    Performers are from Kadhakali School,Cheruthuruthy .

'നിയതിയുടെ ചതുരംഗം'

               പതിനാറാമത് രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയ്ക്ക് നിശാഗന്ധിയില്‍ തിരി തെളിയുമ്പോള്‍ പച്ചയും കത്തിയും കരിയും താടിയും വേദിയില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞാടും. മേളയുടെ ഉദ്ഘാടനത്തോടനുബ്ധിച്ച് സംവിധായകന്‍ രാജീവ് കുമാര്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ 'നിയതിയുടെ ചതുരംഗം (DESTINY'S DICE)' വേദിയില്‍ അരങ്ങേറും. 25ഓളം കഥകളി കലാകാരന്മാരെ വ്യത്യസ്ത വേഷങ്ങളില്‍ ഒരേ വേദിയിലെത്തിക്കുന്ന ഈ ദൃശ്യവിരുന്ന് സമ്പ്രദായിക ചിട്ടവട്ടങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഭിന്നമായി അവതരണത്തിന്റെ ആധുനിക ഭാവങ്ങള്‍ തേടുന്നതാവും.

വയസ്കര മൂസിന്റെ മഹാഭാരതം ആട്ടക്കഥയെ ഉപജീവിച്ച് തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന ഈ ദൃശ്യവിരുന്നില്‍ പാഞ്ചാലി വസ്ത്രാക്ഷേപം, ചൂതാട്ടം, യുദ്ധം, കൗരവ-പാണ്ഡവ പക്ഷങ്ങളുടെ നിലയുറപ്പിക്കല്‍, തുടങ്ങി കഥാമുഹൂര്‍ത്തങ്ങളുടെ സമന്വയമാണിത്. 23 മിനിറ്റ് ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമുള്ള ഈ കലാസൃഷ്ടി ചെറുതുരുത്തി കലാ സ്കൂളാണ് വേദിയിലെത്തിക്കുന്നത്. ബിയാര്‍ പ്രസാദ് ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തിയ കൃതിക്ക് സാബുശിവന്‍ കലാസംവിധാനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. ആര്‍ട്ടിസ്റ്റ് കോര്‍ഡിനേഷന്‍ - കല

Eleven Spools to hook the Golden Pheasant

                 Eleven films portraying anxiety, desires, dreams and hopes of the Third world make the COMPETITION SECTION of 16^th IFFK a kaleidoscope of Afro Asia and Latin America. Of which three are debut films,too.

‘A STONE THROW AWAY’ directed by Sebastian Hiriyath, the Spanish director,   presents the surreal atmosphere in the illusive world of prophecies and dreams.

‘AT THE END OF IT ALL’, the Bengali film directed by Aditi Roy  is set in the city of Kolkatta .

Miang Shang’s ‘BLACK BLOOD’ is about a Chinese couple who got infected by HIV during blood transfusion.

The Turkish film ‘BODY’ directed by Mustafa Noori, talks about the ups-and-downs in the life of a porn star.

 Malayali Filmmaker Prasath Nayar’s ‘DELHI IN A DAY’ portrays the life situation of an upper-class family in the contemporary Delhi. It is his first film.

The Iranian film ‘FLAMINGO NO. 13’ is a film by Hameed Rasay which is about love and ‘Flamingo Hunt’.

‘FUTURE LASTS FOREVER’ directed by Oscar Alper is a movie which delineates a music student who urges to know his past and the traditional music of Turkey.  

‘DOTA SA ALIBADI’ portrays the life in the Kenyan slums under the plight of severe poverty and diseases. Two directors, Ka Mau Wang Dung and Nik Reding, directed this film which shows the discrimination faced by the HIV infected.

‘THE CAT VANISHES’ is an Argentanian film. The anxieties and doubts of a woman who serves her mentally-ill husband is the main theme of this film.

‘THE COLOURS OF THE MOUNTAIN’ is a film directed by Carlos Ceaser.  The innocent companionship and dreams of two childhood friends goes through a milieu of emotional feelings, which is portrayed in this movie.

‘THE PAINTING LENS’ directed by Pablo Perelman is a highly inspirational movie which depicts a painter who has made his own benchmark in the world of painting.

REGISTRATION CLOSES TODAY

           Those who missed to register for 16^th IFFK, can avail a last chance, through online at www.iffk.in from 09.00 am to 08.00 pm or directly at the Delegate Cell working at Kalabhavan Theatre, Thiruvananthapuram, on 07^th December 2011. There will not be any other opportunity to register for delegateship of 16^th IFFK. The rates remain same.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION

The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), which has attained a unique position in the realm of World Cinema, for its immense public participation, is all set to switch on its 16^th edition, from 09^th December 2011.

Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala   Oommen Chandy will inaugurate 16^th IFFK at a function scheduled at Nishagandhi Open air Auditorium, Kanakakkunnu, Thiruvananthapuram at 06.00 pm. Hon’ble Minister for Forest, Wildlife, Sports and Cinema, K.B Ganesh Kumar will preside over the function and the renowned Bollywood Actress   Jaya Bachchan will be the Chief Guest.

Festival Catalogue will also be released at the function by Hon’ble Minister for Culture, Planning and Rural Development Shri. K C Joseph.

Dr. Shashi Tharoor MP will release the Festival Daily Bulletin by handing over the same to Shri. V.S.Sivakumar, Hon’ble Minsiter for Transport and Devaswom.

Shri. K. Murleedharan, MLA, Shri V. Sivankutty MLA and Smt. Remini P Nair, President Thiruvanathapuram District Panchayat, will offer felicitations.

The function will be followed by a Cultural Programme Directed by T K Rajeev Kumar, renowned film director. This will be followed by the screening of the inaugural film ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’, Directed by Shan Zha Shu Zhi Lian.  This will be the debut screening of this 114 minute long Chinese film in India.

             ദാരിദ്ര്യവും രോഗങ്ങളും ദുരിതപൂര്‍ണ്ണമാക്കി തീര്‍ത്ത കെനിയന്‍ ചേരികളിലെ മനുഷ്യജീവിതങ്ങളുടെ ചിത്രമാണ് ഡോറ്റോ സാ എലിബിഡി. കാമൗ വാ ഡുംഗ്, നിക്ക് റെഡിംഗ് എന്നിവര്‍ ചേര്‍ന്ന് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ഈ ചിത്രം എയ്ഡ്‌സ് രോഗികള്‍ നേരിടുന്ന വിവേചനം വെളിച്ചത്തു കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു. അര്‍ജന്റീനയില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള മത്സരചിത്രമായ ദ ക്യാറ്റ് വാനിഷസ് മനോനില തെറ്റിയ ഭര്‍ത്താവിനെ ശുശ്രൂഷിക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ ആധിയും സംശയങ്ങളും ആവിഷ്ക്കരിക്കുന്നു. ബാല്യകാല ജീവിതത്തിലെ നിഷ്കളങ്ക സൗഹൃദങ്ങളും സ്വപ്നങ്ങളും രണ്ട്  കളികൂട്ടുകാരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ വൈകാരിക മുഹൂര്‍ത്തങ്ങളുമായി സംവേദിക്കുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ് 'ദ കളേഴ്‌സ് ഓഫ് ദ മൗണ്ടെയ്ന്‍'. കാര്‍ലോസ് സീസറാണ് സംവിധായകന്‍ . ചിലിയന്‍ സംവിധായകനായ പാബ്ലോ പെരല്‍മാന്റെ 'ദ പെയിന്റിംഗ് ലെസന്‍' നിരന്തര പ്രോത്സാഹനത്തിലൂടെ ചായക്കൂട്ടുകളുടെ ലോകത്ത് അജയ്യനായി തീര്‍ന്ന യുവാവിന്റെ കഥ പറയുന്നു.

         ജനകീയ പങ്കാളിത്തം കൊണ്ട് ലോക സിനിമാ ഭൂപടത്തില്‍ പ്രത്യേക സ്ഥാനം നേടിയ കേരള രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ പതിനാറാമത് എഡിഷന്‍ ഡിസംബര്‍ 9ന് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ചാണ്ടി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യും. നിശാഗന്ധി ഓഡിറ്റോറിയത്തില്‍ വൈകീട്ട് ആറ് മണിക്ക് ആരംഭിക്കുന്ന പ്രൗഢഗംഭീരമായ ചടങ്ങില്‍ ഹിന്ദി സിനിമാതാരം ജയാബച്ചന്‍ മുഖ്യാതിഥിയായിരിക്കും. ചലച്ചിത്ര വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രി കെ ബി ഗണേഷ് കുമാര്‍ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിക്കുന്ന ചടങ്ങില്‍ സാംസ്കാരിക വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രി കെ സി ജോസഫ് ഫെസ്റ്റിവല്‍ കാറ്റലോഗ് പ്രകാശനം ചെയ്യും. ശശിതരൂര്‍ എം പി, ഫെസ്റ്റിവല്‍ ഡെയ്‌ലി ബുള്ളറ്റിന്റെ ആദ്യ പതിപ്പ് ദേവസ്വം-ട്രാന്‍സ്‌പോര്‍ട്ട് വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രി വി എസ് ശിവകുമാറിന് നല്‍കി പ്രകാശനം നടത്തും. തിരുവനന്തപുരം ജില്ലാ പഞ്ചായത്ത് പ്രസിഡന്റ് രമണി പി നായര്‍, എം എല്‍ എ മാരായ കെ മുരളീധരന്‍, വി ശിവന്‍കുട്ടി എന്നിവര്‍ ആശംസകള്‍ അര്‍പ്പിക്കും.

It’s Spring time in Desert

Eight films to impart the impressions of the latest human uprising, which thrilled the supporters of democracy all over the world, are listed in the Arab Cinema Section of 16^th IFFK.  The remnants of the suppressed rage of people, lying dormant for decades under Dictators will be depicted in this section. It will reveal how the neighbours across the ocean, whose thoughts and speech were curtailed for decades, rose up to a rebellion against the prevailing autocratic tyranny. It may, not only satisfy the movie lovers, but motivate the civil society activists, too.

TAHRIR 2011: ‘THE GOOD,THE BAD and THE POLITICIAN’, latest movie from Egypt, will be the highlight of the section. As the name denotes, movie is with three sections and three Directors: Aten Amin, Tamer Ezzat and Amr Salama. It depicts the up rise of commons against Hossini Mubarak.  

First one, ‘The Good’ ( Directed by by Tamer Ezzat ),  shows the life and efforts of revolutionists. ‘The Bad’ ( Directed by Allen Amin ), tells the story of four army officers deputed to defeat the revolution; thirdly ‘The Politician’ ( Directed by Amr Salama ), portrays the life of Mubarak who dictated the nation for decades. Real life shots from Tahrir Square, where the people of Egypt gathered to show their solidarity to the rebellion, will impart the flavour of the revolution to its audience.

ROUGH PAROLE, by Elyes Baccar, illustrates the realities of people’s upheaval in Tunisia, which triggered the ongoing revolutionary attempts for democracy in Deserts. Tunisian   Director Elyes Baccar, renowned for her Documentaries, captures how people turned against the Dictator Ben Ali and details the emotions of commoners of the nation, in this master piece.

            Two films from Morocco, ROUGH HANDS by famous Moroccan Director Mohammed Asli and THE END, a debut attempt by its Director Hicham Lasri, will present a different experience to its viewers. Rough Hands portrays the life of a barber, who helps an illegal migrant. It   dispels light on certain harsh reality of Arab world.  The End, well received in Abudabi Film Festival 2011, is a love story told in the background of the current socio political scenario of Morocco.

DAMASCUS WITH LOVE is a Syrian film by Muhammed Abulaziz. The film leads the audience to the rich-cultural heritage of Middle East. The real face of Syria is captured through the eyes of a ‘Jotha Girl’. She finally discovers Damascus, which was the habitat of her early ancestors. The Film calls for the Arab-Israeli people to go beyond political dissimilarities and improve their mutual friendship.

Lebanon Director Bahij  Hojeij’s HERE COMES THE RAIN, is the story of a person who was kidnapped twenty years ago. The film succeeds to address the harsh political scenario of Arab world through this man’s life. Another Egyptian Film ASMA, directed by Aamir Salama, details the lonely life of a women affected by HIV, and her struggles with it.

             WHERE WE GO NOW   by Nadin Labaki, a famous Labenese Actress turned Director,   pictures the chaos in a war affected desert village. Life becomes horrible for both Christians and Muslims in the village, due to land mines.

            Dark-brutal realities from the lives and times of crusaders of democracy in Arab world are shared in these eight films.

Today’s Indians

(Seven films from contemporary Indian Cinema)

16^th IFFK offers a cross section of contemporary Indian Cinema with seven films of different streams which gathered different accolades. The package is named as ‘Indian Cinema Now’   It will reflect the traditional as well as modern life across the Country.

AADUKALAM' Tamil Movie,  Directed by Vetrimaran, which won three National Awards  for Best Film, Best Script and Best Director , `BABOO BAND BAAJA`,  Marathi Film, Directed by Rajesh Pinjani, the National Award Winner for Best debut Film of a Director, are  the highlights in the list. 

NAUKADUBUI, Directed by notable Director Rituparna Ghosh, AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI' ( Azhaghar Samy’s Horse ), Tamil film directed by Suseenthiran, CHAPLIN, another Bengali entry, Directed by Anindo Anand Bandopadhayaya, HANDOVER, Directed by Saurabh Kumar   and I WANT TO BE A MOTHER, Directed by  Sanjay Porey   are the other films included in this section.

Vetrimaran’s AADUKALAM portrays the dark side of the life of people engaged in traditional cockfight and their irresistible urge to win. Dhanush, leading Tamil young actor plays the lead role.

Rajesh Pinjani’s “BABOO BAND BAAJA”   portrays the conflicts between a mother, who wants to send her son to higher studies, and the father, who wants the boy to continue working for his local band troop. Mitalee Jagteep Vradkar won   National Award for Best Actress and Vivek Chabukswar won National Award for Best Child Artiste by their performance in this Film. 

Rituparna Ghosh’s NAUKADUBUI, based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, won lot of accolades when it was screened at the recently concluded International Film Festival of India, Goa .

The 122 minute long Tamil film AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI', based on a short story by Tamil writer Bhasker Shakti, deals with the story of some superstitious villagers trying to please Azhakarsamy’s horse by conducting a ritual. The movie travels through humorous situations. The film is loaded with myth and popular beliefs, moves around a village fair conducted to please the God. 

CHAPLIN tells the story of an actor ‘Banshi’ who earns his living by enacting Charlie Chaplin, his childhood hero.  HANDOVER, a debut film, is an adaptation of Indian real life situation, depicts the trauma of an unfortunate mother who is forced   to sell her child for a small sum of money.  Sanjay Porey’s ‘I WANT TO BE A MOTHER’ illustrates the story of an American woman who turns to surrogacy for a child.

“Indian Cinema Now” section will bring the audience a vivid picture of Indian social life and   the evolutionary changes occurring in contemporary Indian Film Scenerio.
