16th IFFK offers a cross section of contemporary Indian Cinema with seven films of different streams which gathered different accolades. The package is named as ‘Indian Cinema Now’ It will reflect the traditional as well as modern life across the Country.
AADUKALAM' Tamil Movie, Directed by Vetrimaran, which won three National Awards for Best Film, Best Script and Best Director , `BABOO BAND BAAJA`, Marathi Film, Directed by Rajesh Pinjani, the National Award Winner for Best debut Film of a Director, are the highlights in the list.
NAUKADUBUI, Directed by notable Director Rituparna Ghosh, AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI' ( Azhaghar Samy’s Horse ), Tamil film directed by Suseenthiran, CHAPLIN, another Bengali entry, Directed by Anindo Anand Bandopadhayaya, HANDOVER, Directed by Saurabh Kumar and I WANT TO BE A MOTHER, Directed by Sanjay Porey are the other films included in this section.
Vetrimaran’s AADUKALAM portrays the dark side of the life of people engaged in traditional cockfight and their irresistible urge to win. Dhanush, leading Tamil young actor plays the lead role.
Rajesh Pinjani’s “BABOO BAND BAAJA” portrays the conflicts between a mother, who wants to send her son to higher studies, and the father, who wants the boy to continue working for his local band troop. Mitalee Jagteep Vradkar won National Award for Best Actress and Vivek Chabukswar won National Award for Best Child Artiste by their performance in this Film.
Rituparna Ghosh’s NAUKADUBUI, based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, won lot of accolades when it was screened at the recently concluded International Film Festival of India, Goa .
The 122 minute long Tamil film AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI', based on a short story by Tamil writer Bhasker Shakti, deals with the story of some superstitious villagers trying to please Azhakarsamy’s horse by conducting a ritual. The movie travels through humorous situations. The film is loaded with myth and popular beliefs, moves around a village fair conducted to please the God.
CHAPLIN tells the story of an actor ‘Banshi’ who earns his living by enacting Charlie Chaplin, his childhood hero. HANDOVER, a debut film, is an adaptation of Indian real life situation, depicts the trauma of an unfortunate mother who is forced to sell her child for a small sum of money. Sanjay Porey’s ‘I WANT TO BE A MOTHER’ illustrates the story of an American woman who turns to surrogacy for a child.
“Indian Cinema Now” section will bring the audience a vivid picture of Indian social life and the evolutionary changes occurring in contemporary Indian Film Scenerio.
