(Seven films from Four Master film makers to glitter Homage section)
The Homage Section is a gracious tribute to four eminent Film personalities, whose absence has left a huge void in the world of cinema. The section features seven films including four of Raoul Ruiz (1941- 2011), and one each of ManiKaul (1944 - 2011) Tareque Masud (1956 – 2011) and Elizabeth Taylor (1932 – 2011).
Raoul Ruiz, the Chilean born film maker, rebelled against the conventions of moviemaking in an extensive, varied body of work in different languages. He left behind a vast, intricate collection of experiments, curiosities and innovation to the film lovers around the world. From his hundred films, which was often called surreal and whimsical for its rejection of narrative logic, four will be screened: ‘Misteries De Lisbon’ (2011), ‘Geneologies of a Crime’(1997), ‘Three Lives and a Death’(1996), and ‘That Day’(2003).
‘Misteries De Lisbon’ (Mysteries Of Lisbon), for which he won France’s Louis Delluc Prize, is inspired from a Porteguese Novel. ‘Geneologies of a Crime’(1997) portrays human ideologies through an advocate, Solange, known for taking up hopeless cases. She takes up the case of Rene, who is accused of murdering his wealthy Aunt Jeanne. The movie deals with the case and how it changed the life of Solange, forever.
‘Three Lives and a Death’(1996) tells the story of a young man with four names and four different personalities. ‘That Day’(2003) envisages the story of Livia, a girl who travels through the mysteries of life.
Mani Kaul, the experimental Indian Director, will be revered through the screening of his film “Uski Roti”. Uski Roti, which is often marked as the ‘key to Indian new wave cinema’ depicts the story of a truck driver and his wife and reflects Indian realities.
Tareque Masud (1956 – 2011), the Bangladeshi Director who bagged several international awards, including the International Critics Prize and FIPRESCI Prize for Directors' Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, will be remembered with the screening of his last film ‘Runway’,
It is the story of Rahul, who lives besides the runway of an international airport. There is no news of his father who went in search of a job in the Middle-East. The frustrated jobless Rahul meets Arif, who takes him to a new world of intolerance, violence and ultimately, death.
Elizabeth Taylor, the all time darling of the Hollywood, will be paid homage through the screening of her film ‘Who is Afraid of Verginia Wolf (1996). Directed by Mike Nicholas, the film blazes powerfully through her unpayable acting ability, beauty and distinctive violet eyes.
