(Seven films from contemporary Indian Cinema)

16^th IFFK offers a cross section of contemporary Indian Cinema with seven films of different streams which gathered different accolades. The package is named as ‘Indian Cinema Now’   It will reflect the traditional as well as modern life across the Country.

AADUKALAM' Tamil Movie,  Directed by Vetrimaran, which won three National Awards  for Best Film, Best Script and Best Director , `BABOO BAND BAAJA`,  Marathi Film, Directed by Rajesh Pinjani, the National Award Winner for Best debut Film of a Director, are  the highlights in the list. 

NAUKADUBUI, Directed by notable Director Rituparna Ghosh, AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI' ( Azhaghar Samy’s Horse ), Tamil film directed by Suseenthiran, CHAPLIN, another Bengali entry, Directed by Anindo Anand Bandopadhayaya, HANDOVER, Directed by Saurabh Kumar   and I WANT TO BE A MOTHER, Directed by  Sanjay Porey   are the other films included in this section.

Vetrimaran’s AADUKALAM portrays the dark side of the life of people engaged in traditional cockfight and their irresistible urge to win. Dhanush, leading Tamil young actor plays the lead role.

Rajesh Pinjani’s “BABOO BAND BAAJA”   portrays the conflicts between a mother, who wants to send her son to higher studies, and the father, who wants the boy to continue working for his local band troop. Mitalee Jagteep Vradkar won   National Award for Best Actress and Vivek Chabukswar won National Award for Best Child Artiste by their performance in this Film. 

Rituparna Ghosh’s NAUKADUBUI, based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, won lot of accolades when it was screened at the recently concluded International Film Festival of India, Goa .

The 122 minute long Tamil film AZHAGAR SAMIYIN KUTHIRAI', based on a short story by Tamil writer Bhasker Shakti, deals with the story of some superstitious villagers trying to please Azhakarsamy’s horse by conducting a ritual. The movie travels through humorous situations. The film is loaded with myth and popular beliefs, moves around a village fair conducted to please the God. 

CHAPLIN tells the story of an actor ‘Banshi’ who earns his living by enacting Charlie Chaplin, his childhood hero.  HANDOVER, a debut film, is an adaptation of Indian real life situation, depicts the trauma of an unfortunate mother who is forced   to sell her child for a small sum of money.  Sanjay Porey’s ‘I WANT TO BE A MOTHER’ illustrates the story of an American woman who turns to surrogacy for a child.

“Indian Cinema Now” section will bring the audience a vivid picture of Indian social life and   the evolutionary changes occurring in contemporary Indian Film Scenerio.

Marketing Malayalam Cinema

First time in its history of IFFK, a grand promotional opportunity to Malayalam Films. A new venue for marketing Malayalam Films named as “Marketing Malayalam Cinema“will be functioned as a part of the 16^th IFFK.

It will facilitate meetings with representatives and programmers of other international film festivals with the native Producers, Distributors and Directors. Seminars, Special screenings, interactive sessions with visiting film personalities, will be organized throughout the festival.

Ravindran, reputed actor, will be the Convener of this new venture. മാര്‍ക്കറ്റിംഗ് മലയാളം സിനിമ

                  രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തിലാദ്യമായി മലയാളം സിനിമയുടെ അന്തര്‍ദേശീയ വിപണനത്തിനായി വേദിയൊരുങ്ങുന്നു. 'മാര്‍ക്കറ്റിംഗ് മലയാളം സിനിമ' എന്ന് പേരിട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഈ പുതിയ സംരംഭം പതിനാറാമത് രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ ഭാഗമായി ആരംഭിക്കും .

                   ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സബ്‌ടൈറ്റില്‍ ഉള്ള മലയാള ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ക്കായിരിക്കും ഈ വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ സാധ്യത. വിവിധ രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളകളുടെ പ്രതിനിധികള്‍, ഫെസ്റ്റിവല്‍ പ്രോഗ്രാമേഴ്‌സ് എന്നിവരുമായി കുടിക്കാഴ്ച, അവരുടെ മുന്നില്‍ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കുവാനുള്ള അവസരം, വിപണന സാധ്യതകള്‍ സംബന്ധിച്ച സെമിനാര്‍, ചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍ എന്നിവ ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായി നടക്കും.

(Seven films from Four Master film makers to glitter Homage section)

The Homage Section is a gracious tribute to four eminent Film personalities, whose absence has left a huge void in the world of cinema. The section features seven films including four of Raoul Ruiz (1941- 2011), and one each of ManiKaul (1944 - 2011) Tareque Masud (1956 – 2011) and Elizabeth Taylor (1932 – 2011).

Raoul Ruiz, the Chilean born film maker, rebelled against the conventions of moviemaking in an extensive, varied body of work in different languages. He left behind a vast, intricate collection of experiments, curiosities and innovation to the film lovers around the world. From his hundred films, which was often called surreal and whimsical for its rejection of narrative logic, four will be screened: ‘Misteries De Lisbon’ (2011), ‘Geneologies of a Crime’(1997), ‘Three Lives and a Death’(1996), and ‘That Day’(2003).

‘Misteries De Lisbon’  (Mysteries Of Lisbon), for which he won France’s Louis Delluc Prize, is inspired from a  Porteguese Novel. ‘Geneologies of a Crime’(1997) portrays  human ideologies through an advocate, Solange, known for taking up hopeless cases. She takes up the case of Rene, who is accused of murdering his wealthy Aunt Jeanne. The movie deals with the case and how it changed the life of Solange, forever. 

‘Three Lives and a Death’(1996) tells the story  of a young man with four names and four different personalities.  ‘That Day’(2003)   envisages the story of  Livia, a girl who travels through the mysteries of life.

Mani Kaul, the experimental Indian Director, will be revered through the screening of his film “Uski Roti”. Uski Roti, which is often marked as the ‘key to Indian new wave cinema’ depicts the story of a truck driver and his wife and reflects Indian realities.

Tareque Masud (1956 – 2011), the Bangladeshi Director who bagged several international awards, including the International Critics Prize and FIPRESCI Prize for Directors' Fortnight at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, will be remembered with the screening of his last film ‘Runway’,

It is the story of Rahul, who lives besides the runway of an international airport. There is no news of his father who went in search of a job in the Middle-East. The frustrated jobless Rahul meets Arif, who takes him to a new world of intolerance, violence and ultimately, death.

Elizabeth Taylor, the all time darling of the Hollywood, will  be paid homage through the screening of  her film ‘Who is Afraid of Verginia Wolf (1996). Directed by Mike Nicholas, the film blazes powerfully through her unpayable acting ability, beauty and distinctive violet eyes.

വൈവിധ്യങ്ങളുടെ ദൃശ്യചാരുതയുമായി ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമ

         സമകാലീന ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമയുടെ പരിഛേദമാണ് ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമ ഇന്ന് വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഏഴ് സിനിമകള്‍ . ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സാമൂഹിക ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ആധുനികവും പാരമ്പര്യാധിഷ്ഠിതവുമായ ജീവിതാവിഷ്കാരങ്ങളാണീ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ . ആടുകളം(ADUKALAM), അഴഗര്‍ സ്വാമിയിന്‍ കുതിരൈ(AZHAGARSAMY'S HORSE), ബാബു ബാന്‍ഡ് പാര്‍ട്ടി(BABOO BAND PARTY), ചാപ്‌ളിന്‍ (CHAPLIN), ഹാന്‍ഡ് ഓവര്‍(HANDOVER), മാലാ ആയി ഹയ്ച്ചില്‍(I WANT TO BE A MOTHER), കശ്മഷ് (NAUKADUBI) എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ് 16-ാമത് മേളയിലെ ദൃശ്യ സാന്നിധ്യങ്ങള്‍ . നവാഗതരുടെ മൂന്ന് ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഇതിലുണ്ട്  .

             ഗോവന്‍ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ച ഋതുപര്‍ണ്ണഘോഷി(RITUPARNO GHOSH)ന്റെ നൗക്കാദൂബി രവീന്ദ്രനാഥ ടാഗോറിന്റെ കഥയെ അവലംബമാക്കിയെടുത്ത ചിത്രമാണ്. മികച്ച സംവിധായകന്‍, തിരക്കഥ, നടന്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ ദേശീയ പുരസ്കാരങ്ങള്‍ നേടിയ ചിത്രമാണ് വെട്രിമാരന്‍ (VETRI MARAN) സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത ആടുകളം. കോഴിപ്പോരിന്റെ വന്യമായ വാശിയും വിജയത്തിനായുള്ള കുടിലതകളും ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഗ്രാമീണ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ സ്വാസ്ഥ്യത്തിലേക്ക് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ നിഴല്‍ വീഴ്ത്തുന്ന ആടുകളം കാഴ്ചയെ വന്യമായ ഒരു അനുഭവമാക്കുന്നു.

     ഭാസ്കര്‍ ശക്തിയുടെ കഥയെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി സുശീന്ദ്രന്‍ (SUSINDRAN) എഴുതി സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത അഴഗര്‍ സ്വാമിയിന്‍ കുതിരൈ മൂന്ന് വര്‍ഷത്തെ വരള്‍ച്ചയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം അഴഗര്‍ സ്വാമിയുടെ കുതിരയെ പ്രീതിപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ ഉത്സവം നടത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു. തടിയില്‍ തീര്‍ത്ത കുതിര ഉത്സവത്തിനിടയില്‍ അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നു. നര്‍മ്മം അടിയൊഴുക്കായുള്ള ചിത്രത്തിന് നൂറ്റി ഇരുപത്തിരണ്ട്  മിനിട്ട് ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമുണ്ട് .

മികച്ച നടി, മികച്ച നവാഗത സംവിധായകന്‍ എന്നിവയുള്‍പ്പെടെ മൂന്ന് ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡുകളും മഹാരാഷ്ട്ര സ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഫിലിം അവാര്‍ഡുകളും സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ ചിത്രമാണ് രാജേഷ് പിന്‍ജാനി(RAJESH PINJANI)യുടെ ബാബു ബാന്‍ഡ് പാര്‍ട്ടി. അച്ഛന്റെ ലോക്കല്‍ ബാന്‍ഡ് ട്രൂപ്പിലെ ജോലി തന്നെ മകനും പിന്തുടരണമെന്ന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന അച്ഛന്റെയും മകനെ ഉയര്‍ന്ന വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നല്‍കി ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനാക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയുടെയും സംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങളാണിതില്‍ .

          കുട്ടിക്കാലത്ത് കണ്ട  ചാപ്ലിന്‍ സിനിമയില്‍ ആകൃഷ്ടനായി തെരുവില്‍ ചാര്‍ളി ചാപ്ലിന്റെ അഭ്യാസ പ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തി ജീവിതം തള്ളിനീക്കുന്ന ബാങ്ഷിയുടെ കഥയാണ് 'ചാപ്ലിന്‍' പറയുന്നത്. സംവിധാനം അനിന്ദോബന്ധോപാധ്യയ(ANINDO BANDO BANDOPADHYAY)ഗ്രാമീണ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഇല്ലായ്മകളില്‍ സ്വന്തം കുഞ്ഞിനെ വില്‍ക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന അമ്മയുടെ കഥ പറയുന്ന ചിത്രമാണ് സൗരഭ് കുമാറി(SAURABH KUMAR)ന്റെ ഹാന്‍ഡ് ഓവര്‍ .

സമൃദ്ധി സന്‍ജയ് പോറൈ (SANJAY POREY) സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത മറാത്തി ചിത്രമാണ് 'ഐ വാണ്ട്  ടു ബി എ മദര്‍' ഒരു കുഞ്ഞിനുവേണ്ടി  ഇന്ത്യന്‍ യുവതിയുടെ ഗര്‍ഭപാത്രം വാടകയ്‌ക്കെടുത്ത അമേരിക്കന്‍ യുവതിയുടെ കഥയാണിത്.

         ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമയില്‍ വിവിധ ഭാഷകളില്‍ നടക്കുന്ന പുതിയ ഭാവകത്വ പരിണാമങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാന്‍ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമ വിഭാഗം പ്രേക്ഷകരെ സഹായിക്കുമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം.
